Diabetes Canada is leading the fight to End Diabetes. We want to help people affected to live healthy lives, and also prevent the development and complications of the disease. There are various factors that put people at a high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, such as ethnicity. People from communities of colour, including African, Caribbean, Black, East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and Latin, are at higher risk. Today, high-risk groups make up approximately 20% of the Canadian population, a 100% increase in the past decade.

Here are the number of cases (prevalence) of type 2 diabetes in some of these communities:

8.5% in South Asian communities

8.1% in African, Caribbean, Black communities communities

4.3% in Chinese communities

Here are the incidence rates (the occurrence of new cases) of type 2 diabetes compared to Caucasians:

3.4 times higher in South Asian communities

2 times higher in African, Caribbean, Black communities

1.9 times higher in Chinese communities

Each community faces unique barriers and challenges related to diabetes prevention and management. In conversation with African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) community members, it is evident that these communities face racial bias, and that this is a public health crisis. To address the rising rates of diabetes and to improve the health and quality of life of these Canadians, it is important to take action in support of changes to address key issues, such as systemic racism.

Diabetes Canada is committed to supporting people in high-risk communities through advocacy, education and resources for healthcare professionals, and ensuring the voices in these communities along with specific educational resources reach as many people as possible.

Here are some current resources in support of diabetes prevention and management. We will continue to work with our partners to develop additional resources for these communities.
