Excellence in Action: 2024 National Volunteer Award Winners

Diabetes Canada is proud to celebrate the exceptional dedication of our volunteers and community partners with a virtual awards ceremony.

“We are thrilled to honour the commitment and passion of these remarkable volunteers who have had a profound impact on the work of Diabetes Canada," says Laura Syron, President and CEO of Diabetes Canada. "Their unwavering commitment and selfless efforts have been instrumental in advancing our mission to improve the quality of life of those affected by diabetes. It’s such a privilege to recognize and celebrate the outstanding contributions of our 2024 National Volunteer Award winners."  

Volunteers at Diabetes Canada play a vital role in supporting people affected by diabetes, advocating on their behalf, and advancing innovative research. Every day, thousands of individuals across the country devote their time and energy to our shared vision of a world free of the effects of diabetes. 

The recipients of the 2024 National Volunteer Awards are: 


Saloni Aggarwal (Ontario): National Young Volunteer Award – celebrates the contributions of youth up to age 29, in advancing Diabetes Canada’s mission and goals.  

Dr. Brandy Wicklow (Manitoba): The Charles H. Best Award – recognizes a health-care professional who has made a significant difference across Canada towards improving the quality of life of individuals living with diabetes.  

Drs. Julie McKeen & Peter Sargious (Alberta): National Advocacy Leadership Award – recognizes a Diabetes Canada healthcare professional member, a grassroots advocacy volunteer or group who has demonstrated exemplary leadership, commitment and dedication in advancing public policy in the interests of people living with diabetes and by the advocacy strategy of Diabetes Canada.  

Dr. Mary Jung (British Columbia): The Innovation Award – recognizes individuals who have found innovative, creative and efficient solutions to further Diabetes Canada’s mission and make a difference in the lives of the people living with diabetes.  

National Volunteers of the Year Award 

 

Honours volunteers, either individuals or groups, who have gone above and beyond in supporting the work of Diabetes Canada.

  • Dr. Peter Senior (Alberta) 
  • Jimmy Mui (Ontario) 
  • Krista Lamb (Ontario) 
  • Tanvir Kaur Mundra (British Columbia) 
  • Virtual Diabetes Class Volunteers: Shelley Jones, Edwina Leung, Gail MacNeill and Pam Piotrowski (Canada)
