Today, Diabetes Canada launched a new six-year strategy to support innovative diabetes research in Canada. The research strategy, developed in consultation with the diabetes community, including people living with diabetes, researchers, and health care providers, aims to increase capacity in the research community and maximize real-world impacts of diabetes knowledge and solutions.

“One person is diagnosed with diabetes in Canada every three minutes and we need to keep pace with advancements in diabetes research,” says Laura Syron, President & CEO of Diabetes Canada, who also lives with type 2 diabetes. “At Diabetes Canada, we are deeply committed to the diabetes research community in Canada because we see first-hand how their hard work can lead to incredible breakthroughs that can improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes – just like insulin continues to do.”

Guided by Diabetes Canada’s vision of a world free of the effects of diabetes, the new research strategy will lead the organization from the current year into 2029, with aspirations to deepen its commitment to research innovations in the decades to come.

In the strategy, the organization has set out to support innovative research by advancing knowledge and solutions that address the issues and challenges identified by the diabetes community in Canada; A soon-to-be-launched Diabetes Impact Funds, for instance, strives to rally the support of the philanthropic community to invest in projects that have the potential for bigger breakthroughs.

Diabetes Canada also recognizes that to be a key partner with the diabetes research community, the organization needs to find ways to contribute to their ongoing success. Therefore, the new strategy aims to strengthen capacity to conduct relevant and impactful diabetes research in Canada.

Diabetes research can anticipate two new funding streams to be introduced in the near future. The Research Trainee Awards will provide funding, mentorship and learning opportunities for the next generation of diabetes researchers. And Research Collaboration Support, opening April, 2024, will help to mobilize scientific learnings and insights among scientists and clinicians working in diabetes research.

“What is so meaningful about Diabetes Canada’s new research strategy is that it outlines the commitment to support excellent research and the ambition to award $60 million in new funding to increase the potential for life-changing and life-saving research,” explains Dr. Brandy Wicklow, Co-Chair of Diabetes Canada’s National Research Council.

Since 1975, Diabetes Canada has invested more than $160 million into research and has contributed to countless important discoveries that have improved the lives of people with the condition—from new technologies like the artificial pancreas, to new type 2 diabetes management drugs, to stem cell treatments that show much promise towards a cure for type 1 diabetes.
