Diabetes Canada is aware that Eli Lilly (Lilly Canada) has reported shortages of 10 mL vials of Humalog in Canada.

Eli Lilly anticipates that the Canadian shortage will be resolved on April 14, 2024, with intermittent cycles of product replenishment in the coming months. The company is managing the supply of 10 mL vials to minimize any disruption for people living with diabetes.

Diabetes Canada advises speaking to your healthcare provider if you are concerned about this shortage as there may be alternative formats of Humalog for patients and their healthcare providers to consider. Aside from the 10 mL vials, Humalog is available in cartridges and a pre-filled multi-dose pen (KwikPen). A biosimilar option of Humalog is also available for patients requiring a vial only.

If anyone has any questions or concerns relating to this Canadian shortage, please call the Eli Lilly Customer Response Centre at 1-888-545-5972.

In our conversations with Health Canada and the federal government, Diabetes Canada will continue to advocate for strong protections and safeguards of the Canadian medication supply for the 1 in 3 Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes.
