Diabetes Canada applauds the Government of Manitoba in its funding of its Diabetes Action Plan. In Manitoba’s 2024 budget, the government announced $500,000 for initiatives in its Diabetes Action Plan to improve prevention, detection, management, and surveillance of this chronic condition.

“Our advocacy efforts have focused on establishing funding to support provincial and territorial frameworks, like Manitoba’s Diabetes Action Plan announced last July,” says Joan King, Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy at Diabetes Canada. “With this deepened commitment to diabetes through its budget allocation, Diabetes Canada and our many advocates are pleased to see Manitoba fund its framework, leading the way for other provinces and territories to follow.”

"It’s a breath of fresh air to see such a quick commitment in funding from the government toward the Manitoba Diabetes Action Plan that includes not only treatment and management of all forms of diabetes, but prevention, screening, and specialized care for Indigenous communities,' says Nikki Webb, local diabetes advocate. "We spoke, you listened. Thank you!"

With the announcement of this funding, Manitoba’s Diabetes Action Plan aligns with the national Framework for Diabetes in Canada

The National Framework for Diabetes in Canada was introduced in October of 2022 and acknowledges the complexity of the condition, while reflecting how support-needs differ between provinces and territories.

For Manitoba, this investment comes at a critical time. In 2023, Diabetes Canada estimated that diabetes and its complications would cost the Manitoba healthcare system $157 million, with 80 per cent of this cost attributed to treating diabetes-related complications.
