Diabetes Canada is aware that Health Canada published a public advisory on November 29 to warn people living with diabetes, caregivers and parents about unauthorized blood glucose reading smartwatches promoted on social media and online platforms.

Health Canada has authorized devices that measure blood-glucose levels under a person’s skin and can be monitored by a smart phone or smartwatch. The unauthorized smart watches claim to measure blood-glucose independently, which Health Canada warns may give false blood-glucose readings or may not provide timely results. According to Health Canada, these devices “could pose serious health risks” to people living with diabetes.

Diabetes Canada advises people living with diabetes, caregivers and parents to first consult with their health care provider about their diabetes management when considering a change in device.
