The Purpose

Currently there are 4.7 million Ontarians living with diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetes is one of the most chronic diseases affecting people in Ontario and continues to be on the rise. Diabetes can be stigmatizing. More than one-third of people living with type 2 diabetes do not feel comfortable disclosing their condition to others. For those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, other people’s perceptions of diabetes can lead to experiences of guilt, shame, embarrassment, or isolation.

The Impact

In Support of Diabetes Canada’s D-Camps Programs

Proceeds from the Pump Couture Fashion Shows will help send kids from your community to D-Camps, providing them with the opportunity to enjoy a life-changing summer camp experience. Your support will help us reach our goal of raising $150,000 to send kids with type 1 diabetes to Camp Huronda.

Type 1 diabetes introduces children, youth, and families to a new reality, one that can make some kids feel different from their friends. A diagnosis also brings with it a whole new set of skills to learn, including testing blood glucose (sugar) levels, priming needles for injection, and counting the daily intake of carbs. Many young people often find themselves being the only person at their school or in their community with diabetes and it can be challenging to accept a diagnosis.

Camp Huronda, founded in 1964, has become an integral part of the lives of children and families affected by diabetes. Since it’s inception, it is the only camp facility owned and operated by Diabetes Canada and the only camp that runs a full summer program. Accommodating approximately campers per season, ages 7 – 17. Your generosity can help send a child to camp and foster an atmosphere of inclusivity where campers gain a new level of independence in managing their type 1 diabetes and feel empowered to continue using the healthy practices they learn.
