Across the country, volunteers are shaping a better future for people living with diabetes. Their passion, generosity, and leadership power our mission—from advocacy and innovation to fundraising and community care.

We’re proud to honour the 2026 winners of Diabetes Canada’s National Volunteer Awards. Each of these individuals has gone above and beyond, making a lasting impact in communities nationwide.

National Young Volunteer of the Year

Ho Ching Nika Shiu (Ontario)

A dedicated volunteer project researcher, Nika has played a key role in advancing diabetes knowledge in Canada. She led the creation of a comprehensive inventory of effective diabetes interventions. This included bringing together research, facilitating national roundtable discussions, and delivering actionable insights on private-sector solutions. Her work helped to shape smarter, evidence-based approaches to care with the Sustaining Momentum in Diabetes Framework, which wrapped up in 2026

National Volunteers of the Year

Mark Lehman, FCPA, FCA (Ontario)

A passionate member of the Audit, Investment & Risk Committee since 2020, Mark has contributed his expertise as a board director and committee member while also chairing the National Diabetes Trust Board. Through his extensive network, he has not only raised critical funds but also amplified Diabetes Canada’s profile nationwide.

PDG Georgia Medwedrich (British Columbia)

A volunteer since 2014, Georgia is a past district governor (PDG) with Lions Clubs. She has been a driving force within Lions Clubs across British Columbia, mobilizing volunteers and strengthening advocacy efforts. From launching a Diabetes Canada newsletter to championing support for D-Camps Camp Kakhamela, her impact spans communities across the province.

Deidre Burns (Nova Scotia)

With more than a decade of service at Camp Morton, Deidre ensures campers are cared for with precision and compassion as a dietitian. Her thoughtful menu planning accommodates diverse dietary needs (even under challenging conditions) helping campers stay healthy while fully enjoying the D-Camps experience.

Jeanne Bank (Ontario)

A dedicated volunteer at Banting House since 2017, Jeanne brings history to life as a tour guide and volunteer trainer. As secretary of the Museum Advisory Committee, she has elevated professionalism and supported the growth of fellow volunteers to ensure a great experience for all visitors.

Kristyn Doran (Ontario)

As chair of Pump Couture Toronto, Kristyn helped raise over $300,000 while building strategic partnerships and expanding community engagement. Her leadership has been instrumental in establishing and growing this signature fundraising event.

Erin O’Toole (British Columbia)

For more than five years, Erin has supported Camp Kakhamela as a medical team administrator, ensuring smooth operations through times of change. Known for her energy and resourcefulness, she brings joy to camp life while supporting families with diabetes.

Barbara Weryk, RN CDE (Ontario)

Barbara’s impact spans multiple D-Camps and Family Camp, as well as the Virtual Diabetes Education Program (VDEP). She empowers families with knowledge and confidence, ensuring they have the tools and information to navigate life with diabetes.

Ellen Fraser (Ontario)

A longstanding member and current co-chair of the Camp Huronda Committee, Ellen has helped strengthen operations and professionalism. Her seven years of involvement in D-Camps reflects her dedication to excellence and sustainability in camp programs.

Sepelene Deonarine, RN BScN MAEd (Ontario)

A trusted voice in her community, Sepelene actively connects people to Diabetes Canada resources. Through outreach in faith and cultural communities, she ensures people have the awareness and tools they need to access support.

Dustin Halvorson (Saskatchewan)

As chair of Pump Couture Regina, Dustin has been the driving force behind the event’s success, securing approximately 90% of its funding (more than $250,000), partnerships, and support. His leadership has transformed the event into a thriving community effort.

National Leadership Advocacy Award

Scott MacMillan (New Brunswick)

Inspired by his daughter’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes, Scott has become a powerful advocate for change. He has been instrumental in conversations with regional and federal governments, influencing pharmacare discussions and improving policies in schools. His leadership is helping create better outcomes for children living with diabetes.

Innovation Award

Ilana Jaye Halperin, MD MSc FRCPC (Ontario)

A leader in advancing diabetes care, Ilana partnered with Diabetes Canada to expand the reach of an innovative safety tool for automated insulin delivery (AID). Her clinical practice guidelines (CPG) and research have elevated awareness and reduced barriers to better health outcomes empowering greater advocacy opportunities.

Charles H. Best Award

Dr. Peter A. Senior (Alberta)

A respected leader and advocate, Peter served as chair of the Board and is an active member of the Mission Committee. His contributions to the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) and the Canadian Journal of Diabetes, along with his role as a frequent media spokesperson, have advanced knowledge, awareness, and care for people living with diabetes across Canada.
