This week, Dr. Jan Hux, President and CEO announced her plans for retirement effective January 2020. This news is met with mixed emotions as Dr. Hux is a passionate and dedicated leader for Diabetes Canada, however we respect and understand that significant changes in her personal life has brought her to this recent decision.

Since joining Diabetes Canada in 2012, Dr. Hux has played a critical role in the development and success of the organization. As Chief Science Officer she brought to the organization a strong appreciation of the trajectory of the diabetes epidemic and she championed the expansion of the organization’s mandate to include prevention. She became an important voice in the call for healthy public policy to reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes as well as improved access to the resources needed for the management of all types of diabetes.

In this last year as our President and CEO, Dr. Hux has reshaped and sharpened the focus of the organization so that it could drive impact at a population level. Within Diabetes Canada, Dr. Hux promoted accountability and collaboration and fostered a highly effective leadership team. She has led the team and the entire organization to a firmer state of stability – poised for continued momentum.

Over the next months, we will be conducting a search to find the new President and CEO of Diabetes Canada. It is our priority to find the best individual to further develop and implement our population impact strategy, while keeping the organization strong and effective.

During this transition period, Dr. Hux and the Leadership Team will continue to be fully engaged in delivering on our organization’s objectives and developing a robust business plan. Their commitment will ensure a smooth transition of leadership.

We are grateful to Dr. Hux for the dedication, passion and wisdom she has given Diabetes Canada over the past seven years. She will be greatly missed by the staff, volunteers, the National Board, professional members and partners alike. At the same time, we look forward to building on the successes set in motion under her leadership and eagerly anticipate the next chapter for the organization as we continue to lead the fight against diabetes.
