Position statement

People with diabetes have the right to be assessed for a license to drive a motor vehicle on an individual basis in accordance with Diabetes Canada’s recommendations for private and commercial driving.

Background and rationale

People with diabetes often face discrimination when being assessed for a driver’s license simply on the basis of their diagnosis. In fact, most people with diabetes can drive safely provided they are adequately informed about their condition and its management, and take the necessary precautions.

In consultation with a number of experts, Diabetes Canada has developed a comprehensive set of recommendations for Diabetes and Driving (2018).
