The Flame of Hope is an eternal flame that honors Sir Frederick Bantings discovery of insulin, as well as all those who have been affected by diabetes. Simultaneously, it serves as a reminder that insulin manages diabetes but does not cure it; ultimately, it stands for the hope that a cure will soon be found.

Diabetes Canada has been running the Flame of Hope Golf Tournaments across Canada for over 10 years in support of the 11.7 million people in Canada living with diabetes or prediabetes.

Join us this summer at one of our tournaments across Canada. Click on your community link for more information about the tournament, how to get involved or to register a foursome.

Growing Prevalence

Every day, 640 Canadians are diagnosed with diabetes. That is 1 person every 3 minutes. Diabetes is not slowing down and more work needs to be done. One in 3 people across Canada are affected by diabetes or prediabetes, and some will experience life-threatening complications.

The Flame of Hope Golf Tournaments raise funds to help education, support services, advocacy and diabetes research that could lead to the next big medical breakthrough.

The Impact

Since 1975, Diabetes Canada has provided more than $140 million in grants, awards and partnerships to scientists across the country, to advance research discoveries, improve treatments and eventually find a cure. Through Diabetes Canada's advocacy efforts, people living with diabetes have seen government coverage for their medications and supplies extended beyond childhood.

And that’s not all:

We continuously raise funds for our medically supervised D-Camps programs for children living with type 1 diabetes. A type 1 diagnosis also brings with it a whole new set of skills to learn, including testing blood glucose (sugar) levels, priming needles for injection, and counting the daily intake of carbs. Many young people often find themselves being the only person at their school or in their community with diabetes and it can be challenging to accept a diagnosis.

Diabetes Canada operates nine summer D-Camps across Canada and ten family camp programs, which are attended by more than 1,900 children and youth living with type 1 diabetes. The goal of D-Camps is to foster an atmosphere of inclusivity where campers gain a new level of independence in managing their type 1 diabetes and feel empowered to continue using the healthy practices they learn.

Your support can help End Diabetes.
