Type 1 diabetes: the hope of prevention, the dream of a cure

Type 1 diabetes has better technology and treatment options than ever before. However, for those living with the disease, all of those wonderful improvements are still not an end to diabetes. This talk will review new diabetes research in Canada that are taking us closer to a cure, both by way of biology and technology, and novel research that aims to avert type 1 right at the time of diagnosis.

Dr. Jan Hux is the Chief Science Officer at Diabetes Canada.  In this role, she provides strategic leadership within the research, professional education and government relations portfolios. She is a clinician-scientist, trained as a general internist (Toronto, Western) and health services researcher (Harvard, Toronto).  For 20 years she held a variety of research and executive roles at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) in Ontario, where she was responsible for developing and leading the diabetes health services research portfolio. She has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. While she is not directly affected by diabetes, she is passionate about the cause because of its impact on the lives of her patients and on countless Canadians.

My Story

Living with type 1 diabetes, I understand first-hand the challenges of living with a nutrition-related condition. I channel my commitment to health, my love of food, and my passion for competitive fitness into my own daily life as well as my professional practice.

I treat men, women, and children of all ages as well as teams and families. I am committed to evidence-based practice, and use a non-dieting, food first approach, that focuses on balance and long term success.

My ventures into high intensity fitness pursuits including boxing and CrossFit training, heighten my interest in how food fuels the body for optimal health and performance. As a nutrition expert, CrossFit coach, and personal trainer, I can help devise the best diet and exercise strategies to help my clients meet their health and fitness goals.
