It is estimated that by 2020, more than 139,000 Manitoba residents will be living with diabetes. Latest estimates also indicate that close to 52,000 people have the disease, but are undiagnosed.

This program focusses on diabetes risk assessment and education and is designed to increase diabetes awareness, assess diabetes risk factors, and facilitate early diagnosis within diverse communities.  Early diagnosis and education can lead to better diabetes management, which can decrease or delay the development of the common complications of diabetes. This program targets individuals within the Downtown, North End, Point Douglas, Inkster and Seven Oaks areas of Winnipeg. As these areas have some of the highest diabetes rates.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS:

  1. Risk assessments are quick drop-in stations where participants can complete a questionnaire and a few simple tests to evaluate their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. By knowing this information, it can encourage participants to make better lifestyle choices to reduce their risk.
  2. Learning Series Presentations are designed to help participants understand diabetes, learn how to prevent it and gain the knowledge to live well with the condition.
  3. Health-care professional presentations can be requested to educate your participants on a specific health issue related to diabetes.
To schedule a presentation or risk assessment at your community event, please contact Carly Kowalchuk at Carly.Kowalchuk@diabetes.ca
  4. A health fair and BBQ will take place annually in mid-July within the North End/Point Douglas area. This event will bring together Winnipeg’s North End community members to enjoy a healthy BBQ and connect with local agencies for resources and information to improve their health and wellness.

The event will feature:

  • Blessing from Elder
  • Diabetes risk assessments
  • Foot care assessments
  • “Ask the Experts” station
  • Booths from various community organizations
  • Healthy living activities for children
  • Free BBQ
  • Prizes
  • Local entertainment
